      <image:title>the art</image:title>
<image:caption>A mock-up cover for The Shining, by Stephen King. The famous room number corresponds to the blood-filled cell of this wasp hive—zooming in close gives a little surprise. And zooming out makes the face easier to see. In the book, wasps and nests are a big theme—wasps stuff their often still-living, but paralyzed prey into cells containing the eggs. The eggs then hatch, and the wasplings (larvae) feed on whatever poor creature was crammed in there as fodder. King likens the Overlook Hotel to a wasp’s nest, each room a cell in which something evil festers and feeds on anyone unfortunate enough to become food for the ghostly larvae. Even more disturbing, the face hidden in this nest is a call to one of the final scenes in the novel, in which Jack Torrence bashes in his own face with a croquet mallet in front of his son, Danny. His ruined face becomes a shifting, bloody mask of each of the souls claimed by the hotel as it uses Jack as its mouthpiece.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An old birthday card for my grandfather. He is as badass as this suggests. After WWII, he worked as a naval interceptor and code-breaker. He learned Russian in an eight-month crash course, despite already speaking around four languages prior. He then listened in on radio comm’s between Russian ships. Because the Russians knew they were being spied upon, they switched up their codenames regularly. It was my grandfather’s job to learn and keep note of the changing callsigns and their corresponding captains by recognizing their voices. He also ran a few marathons and set up a tannery in Macau. Badass.</image:caption>
